Dr. Mercer grew up in a tiny town in New Jersey and caught the pony bug at a young age. She credits her grandfather’s love of horse racing and her Aunt Lois’s menagerie of horses and dogs with her lifelong horse and corgi obsession.
Her first pet was a guinea pig named Mickey Mantle. Most of her childhood summers were spent on her aunt and uncle’s farm in Texas, where she learned to ride and care for horses. She got her first (and only) horse, Coffee, in high school and competed with him in local hunter jumper shows. They also covered many miles exploring the local trails. It’s hard for her to remember a time when she didn’t want to become a vet.
A proud Nittany Lion, she and Coffee studied Animal Sciences and Spanish at Penn State. She moved west to attend Western University of Health Sciences College of Veterinary Medicine, where she graduated with highest honors. Her professional interests include internal medicine, preventative care, equine welfare, and emergency and critical care.
Outside the clinic, Sarah enjoys yoga, hiking, skiing, and traveling with her husband Greg and very spoiled corgi Winifred. Her first love, Coffee, now lives a life of leisure at a retirement farm.
